Healthy Lifestyle Challenge (Update)
Before the 2017 New Year, my diet consisted of dessert every night, drinking 1-3 sugary drinks like juice or soda, and fast food 1-2 nights a week. Besides that, I figured I ate pretty healthy. I also thought that since I went to the gym regularly I deserved to cheat every now and then. What I didn’t realize was that those “cheat meals” added excess sugar and processed foods that my body didn’t need.
Because of my cheat meals, even though I worked out regularly I remained the same size and same shape. When I desired to loose weight I would replace a few meals with slim fast for a week or two and after would gain it all back.
Now in my mid 30’s I want to be in the best shape of my life and feel great in the process, so in 2017 I introduced the unofficial Healthy Lifestyle challenge. After reading about all the harmful effects of sugar and processed foods on the body, I wanted to feel better, have more energy, and finally get in the best shape of my life. After my father was diagnosed with diabetes last year and, a cousin of mine who is younger than I was diagnosed pre diabetic I knew I had to make changes to my diet. In addition, my daughter, husband and I all started to become overweight. These were motivating factors for me to want to live healthier.
It has now been 2 weeks since beginning the Healthy Lifestyle Challenge.
Within 2-3 days after, I noticed that I had increased alertness and energy. Even though I don’t weigh myself, I know I have lost a few pounds from how my clothes fit looser around the waist. Some days have been hard. After a few days, I started to crave sweets. When I do, I just grab an apple or whip up a protein shake. I’ve eliminated all of the unhealthy snacks out of the house, so my daughter complains of not having anything to snack on. Even though she could easily grab an apple or some carrot sticks. It has been difficult at times waking up early in the morning to work out. Twice I have woken up too early, like 2:30 or 3am and had difficulty falling back to sleep before 5am, but I dragged myself out of bed at 5am anyway. I remind myself how good I’ll feel once I get up and to the gym.
Here are a few more things I have done to help me stick with my decision to stay healthy.
- I’ve cut back on sugar and processed food.
I loved Five Guys, Wendy’s and Taco Bell, but I had to drop them like the bad habits that they are and eliminate them from my diet. In addition, I started reading the labels on the foods that I ate. There were foods that I was eating which I thought were healthy, like my beloved Cherry Vanilla Yogurt that I ate every morning. MY favorite yogurt that I ate, thinking I was all healthy and stuff, has a whopping 29 grams of sugar in it!
Quick math lesson: There is 14.3 grams in a Tablespoon. What I was eating for breakfast was the equivalent to 2 Tablespoons of sugar!! I was consuming that in addition to three teaspoons of sugar in my coffee each morning! Yikes! That’s not including the surgery drinks and dessert I was eating every day! Even the Motts Applesauce that my daughter use to eat had 22grams of sugar in it!
Lately, I prepare most if not all of my meals at home including lunch which has been left overs from the dinner that I cooked the night before.
- I’ve added more protein to my diet. All my meals consist of a lean protein fish, chicken breast, and steak. I also drink a protein shake after workouts.
- I strength train 2 times a week and do cardio for 30 minutes or more 5 times a week.
The next Healthy Lifestyle Challenge update will be in about a month. Let me know what you want to hear in my next update. I would love to hear about your workout goals or things you’ve done to bring in the New Year in a healthier way.

Until next time my Sweet!
I usually don’t comment on celebrity news, or anything that has to do with Soulja Boy, but today I’m compelled to speak out. Soulja Boy’s behavior has always been somewhat of a mystery to me, but recently his unusual behavior has topped the blogging cake. Soulja Boy has been on blogs recently dissing Chris Brown on social media accusing him of being under the influence of coke, and trying to chill with gang members amongst other silly things. By the looks of it, Soulja you may not be in the right state of mind yourself.
My relationship with DeAndre Cortez Way (aka Soulja Boy) started a few years back. At the time my husband and I were separated, I was pursuing a modeling career, and just started a new career as a teacher.
On Facebook, one day I liked and commented a few photos Soulja Boy had posted of his tattoos. Prior to this, I wasn’t a fan. I heard a few of his songs on the radio, but AM NOT and never have been a groupie. Shortly after I sent my comments he sent me a DM commenting on my photos. I replied by DM’ing him my number and told him to give me a call. I didn’t expect for him to call me, but he texted me about a day later. We began to communicate regulalry via text message, video chat, and over the phone. We talked almost every day and for a long time didn’t go more than 2 or 3 days without speaking to one another. At the time, I considered him a friend.
Soulja Boy had a number 1 hit album at age 16, but has never since seen that same level of success, which troubles him a lot.
Quite often when we talked he slammed other artists whom he worked with, and new artists telling me that they stole his swag and never gave him credit. He was tired of the fame and talked about hiring a body double, claiming that many artists and entertainers in the industry hire body doubles. He named a few artists like Lil Wayne and others, whom had hired body doubles to preform, meet fans and sign autographs. He shared a lot of personal things about his life with me. Things that I would probably never share with anyone.
When I got to know him better he acted like a business savvy mentor who cared about my success as a model. Other times he acted like a immature, spoiled rich kid that would throw a tantrum if you told him no.
After a few months of talking he asked me to wire him some money, and I agreed. It was just a couple hundred dollars, but I did it. Second time, came a few weeks later when he asked me to pay his phone bill to Metro PCS. He told me that he was in tax debt, claiming that his accounts were frozen.
Once, over the phone, he asked me to marry him. He said that he could arrange the whole thing. Expressing that he needed someone he could trust and that wasn’t out to get him. I reminded him that we had never “officially” met and that I did have two children, but he said he didn’t care. The rational part of me knew better, but the wild side of me did consider it. Who knows if he was being serious at the time. I just kind of brushed it off.
Our friendship ended with a huge argument over a cell phone bill. I paid his phone bill with my credit card over the phone on three way we hung up and later that day i called him. When I called, some chick answered his phone phone demanding to know who I was. It was kind of hilarious and eventually I hung up and she called me back cursing me out still demanding who I was and why I was calling her man. So, I just called my credit card company and cancelled the last transaction on my card.
Sadly, my “friendship” with DeAndre ended after the phone bill incident. He was mad when he found out that I cancelled the payment and threatened to expose me to my husband and post the pictures that I sent him via personal text on his social networks. I reminded him that I had a few personal pictures of him that he didn’t want me to post that social media would be way more interested in seeing.
My husband eventually found text messages and images on my computer that we sent each other. This caused some tension between my husband and I so I just never spoke about it. My husband and I have since reconciled, I changed my phone number and at one point stopped communicating on social networks for awhile. Now, I am happily married, so I don’t benefit anything by telling this story. In my new book “A Prostitute’s Guide to Success” I credit DeAndre aka Soulja Boy for at times being a good friend and helping me focus on my dreams.
The beef between him and Chris Brown may be entertaining to some, and knowing DeAndre he’s just doing this for entertainment. Because I know DeAndre, more than Soulja Boy I see past the humor of it all.
DeAndre, if you read this know that the media loves a train reck, and your actions may have some serious consequences. Please get the help you need before it is too late.
New Year New You
When my alarm rang on my phone it was 6:00am. I hit the snooze button like 3 times before my husband woke me up by snatching the warm covers off my body. I felt frozen. “Get up!” Hubby said sounding irritated.
It was still dark outside. I heard slight pitter-pattering on the rooftop. Was it Santa? Hell no, but it was sure enough rain! I immediately started to regret my decision to choose TODAY of all days to start going back to the gym.
Luckily, I set my gym clothes out the night before. Setting gym clothes out the night before working out is a game changer, especially if you choose to workout in the early morning. I can’t recall how many times in the past having to turn on the lights and rummage through dresser drawers and hampers to look for gym clothes before giving up completely, laying down and falling back to sleep. Seeing my running shoes, gym towel, and leggings all there motivates me to get up.
But it was cold and rainy out. I reminded myself that I made a promise start today, whether I like it or not. After I got dressed, I made sure I had all my must have items; keys, phone earphones, towel, purse, water bottle…check!
I let my car heater warm up before taking off. The gym is about a 5-mile drive from my house. I parked in the gym lot and sat in the car for about 5 minutes before gaining the momentum to walk out in the cold, wet, rain once again and start my work out. I walked into the gym and it wasn’t all that bad.
I wore a waste trainer during my workout. Not sure if they work, but I’m going to use it through the month and track the results.
There were a few people scattered amongst the cardio machines and weights. It was much warmer inside, but I was still kind of tired. I decided to start on the stair stepper for 25 minutes and half way through had a burst of energy. Next, the treadmill for 20 minutes rotating between walking at a speed of 4.0 and jogging at 5.2 with an incline of 3.5. Then finally, for a cool down on the Elliptical for 15 minutes. Tomorrow, I’ll do only 30 minutes of cardio focusing more on weights and lower body. On day three cardio, day 4 upper body and day 5 cardio once again.
I would love to hear about your workout goals, or other things you are doing to bring in the New Year in a healthier way.
